Terminator 2: Judgment Day

posted on 19 June 2008

Imagine my joy being able to see the R-rated Terminator 2: Judgment Day in the theatre at the tender, action-thirsty age of 13. Just as MPAA ratings honcho Jack Valenti and his cohorts predicted, I saw a lot of violence that fateful summer evening. My ears were nearly blown away with the endless chain of booming explosions, jackknifing rigs, screaming motorcycles and Ah-nuld gibberish. My eyes were fixated on the same explosions, big vehicular stunts, Ah-nuld’s chiselled physique, as well as some of the coolest effects since I’d seen since Jabba the Hutt let his presence be known in Return of the Jedi. Combine all that with the classic smell and taste of hot buttered popcorn and the only sense that wasn’t on overdrive that day was touch. And in the many years that have passed since T2, few films have touched me and stayed with me like this one, especially when you consider that this is a summer sequel.

In one of the greatest coups in the history of film, James Cameron managed to pull off the unthinkable; he took the baddest bad guy of them all – the Terminator – and made him good without compromising the original film’s vision or legacy. Rather than pitting Arnold Schwarzenegger’s old muscle car T-800 against another equally ripped beefcake, a sleeker, colder, deadlier and much smaller Robert Patrick was cast as the upgrade version T-1000. But the T-1000 needs a gimmick to convince the audience that he is a legitimate foe, and to make Schwarzenegger the unlikely heroic underdog. Patrick’s evil-eyed stare does me in, but I guess the rest of the world digs his fancy morphing abilities. Not only do they make the T-1000 a contender, but they also make for some ultra-spiffy effects that have stood the test of time.

As with the original Terminator, the industrial set design is as important an antagonist as the Terminator’s mission to kill. The cold metals and dusty roads lay the groundwork for the near future where robots rule the earth and man is left scrambling to survive. The sets are the connecting points of present and future, as they are always there. The Terminators are merely blips in history. Sure, they pose as a great threat, but they’re only in the present for a short period.

As appealing as the film’s visuals are, it’s really the heart and soul of the characters that make T2 transcend the summer sequel dumping ground. Watching Edward Furlong interact with Schwarzenegger is like watching Fess Parker trying to train Old Yeller. The Terminator is John’s new pet and he must show the cyborg how to be an upstanding citizen with just enough ‘tude so Ah-nuld can be Ah-nuld and spew out some of his famous Corn Flake one-liners. The pair shows great oddball chemistry together, adding the occasional light-hearted moment to brighten an otherwise dark and dreary story.

Years after my first viewing of it, I remember T2 not so much for the day I pretended to be the rebel I never was, watching a restricted movie in the theatre for the first time. I watch it on a regular basis now for many reasons: the visuals, the sounds, the story, the characters, the plausible rendition of the end of the world and an excuse to flop on the couch with some tasty junk food. Satisfying all my senses, T2 is one of those classic films that will never die. Just as Ah-nuld prominently proclaims that he’ll be back, so will I, to watch T2 again and again.
